Prosthetic leg cost and funding in South Africa

What affects the cost of a prosthetic leg in South Africa, and the funding routes patients commonly ask about: medical aid, public hospitals, compensation funds and NGOs.

What affects the cost of a prosthetic leg?

There is no single price. Cost depends on the amputation level (below-knee or above-knee), the socket, the type of knee and foot components, and the fitting and follow-up visits needed.

A first prosthesis often needs socket changes as the residual limb settles, so ask your provider what follow-up is included in any quote.

Funding routes to ask about

Medical aid: many schemes have a prosthetic or external appliance benefit. Ask your scheme for the limit, pre-authorisation rules and required motivation letter.

Public sector: patients without medical aid can ask their hospital or clinic about referral to a provincial orthotic and prosthetic service.

Injury at work or on the road: claims may go through the Compensation Fund or the Road Accident Fund, depending on how the injury happened.

Non-profit organisations and community fundraising can sometimes help with part of the cost.
