Life after a leg amputation: recovery steps
A plain-language guide to the usual steps after a leg amputation in South Africa: healing, rehabilitation, prosthetic assessment, fitting and follow-up.
1. Healing and early recovery
The first weeks focus on wound healing, pain management and staying active safely. Follow your treating team's instructions and report changes in the wound.
2. Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy builds strength, balance and safe transfers. Occupational therapy helps with daily tasks at home and work.
3. Prosthetic assessment
When healing allows, a clinician assesses whether a prosthetic leg is suitable, considering your health, amputation level and goals.
4. Fitting and gait training
A socket is made for your residual limb, then you practise walking with the new leg. Adjustments are common in the first months.
5. Long-term follow-up
Sockets and parts wear and the limb changes shape over time. Regular reviews keep the prosthesis comfortable and safe.
