Below-knee vs above-knee prosthesis: the differences

How a below-knee (transtibial) prosthesis differs from an above-knee (transfemoral) prosthesis, and what that means for walking and rehabilitation.

Below-knee (transtibial)

Keeping your own knee usually makes walking with a prosthesis easier and uses less energy. The prosthesis has a socket, a pylon and a foot.

Above-knee (transfemoral)

The prosthesis also needs a knee joint, which replaces the work of the natural knee. Training usually takes longer, and the choice of knee affects stability and walking speed.

Which is right for me?

The amputation level is decided by your surgeon. Your prosthetic team then recommends components that fit your health, activity level and goals.
